Lanka Comic Con 2018 was held on the 25th & 26th of August at Trace Expert City, Maradana with the motto “Come be yourself”. By now, we all know that Lanka Comic Con is a Sri Lankan Geek cultural festival which has become a stage to unveil the multi-genre talents that are hidden among Sri Lankans regardless of their age.
"LCC 2018 was bigger, prettier and more enjoyable than ever before - the feedback from people seems to suggest that they agree!" - Thilani Samarasinha, Organiser
The most obvious change the Comic Con family has done was to change the location of the event from the usual SLECC. The shift is justifiable as Trace Expert had more space in comparison and it gave a festive vibe to the whole event rather than the event just being a conference and it really felt like entering into a carnival.
"Really enjoyed the venue. This looks more like a festival compared to past comic cons."- Kisho
Another difference the organizers had made this year was conducting the proceedings in all three languages. That really is an appreciable novel touch to the Lanka Comic Con legacy.
From the moment you enter after purchasing the ticket, generously priced at LKR 200, at the ticket counter, the play area, cafeteria, the Art Valley, the mini theatre, stalls and stage, simply put, everything within the event zone was properly arranged.
The Artist Alley was filled with our Lankan talents. The overwhelming display of talent of the artists with their paintings, graphic designs, animations and sketches gained a lot of attention. There were stalls that sold posters, action figures, stickers, badges, chains, T shirts and accessories. Anything and everything a geek could want. Also, there were tattoo stalls as well. We, as the Youth Partner of the event, had our own Chocolaate Magazine Stall and we were humbled by the response we got at our stall with the amount of people that visited our stall to get a personalized Magazine cover featuring them as their favorite characters. One of the most fun part of any Comic Con is getting to see the different cosplays of our favorite characters. And, this year’s Lanka Comic Con had plenty of fan-favourite comic, movie, TV show, animations and anime characters ranging from Marvel, DC superheroes to Pokemon, to Naruto to Video Games and many more.
"It was my first Comicon that I cosplayed, I loved it. It was well organized from what I saw. The panel discussions and sessions were quite informative. The stalls too were quite well done with equal exposure for all. Overall, hats off to the organizers." - Mahesh
Day 1 consisted of a panel discussion on “The rise of Asian comics” with Davaki Neogi and Isuri Dayarathne and another panel discussion with the Komaali Kings team, live action rolelaying, table top games, a melomanic session and the Anime Film Festival. Day 2 was filled with more panel discussions, more cosplayers, Anime quizzes, music acts and an Anime Film Festival as well. Also, not just mainstream cinema, independent ventures got their due recognition at this year’s Lanka Comic Con.Thanks to the organizers, volunteers, vendors, partners, sponsors, and of course every single geek who attended for ensuring that the 2018 Lanka Comic Con was a success.
